Find out Carpegna
Info and history
Carpegna is located on the border with Tuscany, at the foot of the homonymous mountain about 1415 meters high, in an area with very varied landscapes and rich in waterways and vegetation. In ancient times the area was inhabited by the Umbrians and subsequently passed under the dominion of the Romans as part of the jurisdiction of Macerata Feltria (municipium of Pitinum Pisaurense). In the early Middle Ages the city experienced its maximum splendor under the government of the Carpegna Lordship, from whose family the Counts of Montefeltro, the Malatesta and the Della Faggiola probably also came. They governed these lands until the mid-eighteenth century and then ceded control to the Duchy of Urbino and, with the devolution, in 1819 the territories were passed among the possessions of the Papal State.
To be seen
Among the historical buildings we mention the Palazzo dei Principi (17th century), located in the center of the town, the church of San Nicolò (17th century) and the church of S.Sisto with a fine Romanesque crypt, near the cemetery. Outside the town stands the Romanesque parish church of San Giovanni (XII century), partially rebuilt in 1323. Thanks to the beauty of its territory and the belonging to the Natural Park of Sasso Simone and Simoncello, di where Carpegna hosts the headquarters, tourism is becoming increasingly important in the economy of the city. Among its typical products we mention the "Prosciutto di Carpegna", whose tradition has medieval origins.
