Find out Porto San Giorgio
Info
Between the mouths of the Tenna to the north, and the Ete to the south, lies the city of Porto San Giorgio. Anciently "Castellum Firmanorum", its history is linked to that of the municipality of Fermo, of which it was the outlet to the sea, even if some archaeological finds, such as amphorae and other wall finds, seem to locate the ancient Roman naval vessel further south, on the mouth of the Ete river. The development of the city is mainly linked to the inauguration of the railway station in 1863. The tourist activity was certainly the one to benefit the most from this. On the seafront, modern hotels stand alongside Art Nouveau villas. The port has also been influenced by tourism, placing a beautiful tourist port alongside the fishing port. The latter underwent an important development at the end of the 17th century. since previously the fishing activity served only to satisfy local consumption. The agricultural territory is intensely cultivated with cereals, vines, olive trees and fruit trees. The industrial activity is dedicated to the production of cordage, bricks, furniture and footwear.

Church of San Giorgio
At the crossroads for Fermo, on the SS 16, we find the nineteenth-century church, with three naves, of the city's patron saint. Inside, a copy of a polyptych by Carlo Crivelli is preserved, created by students of the Art Institute of Fermo. The original was dismembered into several parts, which are still preserved in various foreign museums: National Gallery in London ("Saints Peter and Paul"), National Gallery in Washington ("The Madonna and Child"), Garden Museum in Boston ("Saint George "), Phillbrock Art Center of Tulsa ("Saints Catherine and Alexandria and Jerome"), National Museum of Krakow ("St. Anthony the Abbot and Saint Lucia"). Also inside the parish church, we can observe a canvas with the Saints of the Franciscan Order by the Bolognese painter Gaetano Gandolfi. In the square in front of the church we find the Fountain of Democracy, the work of Alfonso Bernardini, and the Clock Tower.
Rocca Tiepolo and Castle
It is located on the hill behind the church of S.Giorgio. Built in the 13th century. by the Potesta of Fermo (and future Doge of Venice) Lorenzo Tiepolo, the fortress is pentagonal in shape with Guelph towers and battlements and a high central keep. The castle was located to the south of the fortress and consisted of a trapezoidal wall reinforced along the perimeter by a series of towers, one of which was more powerful to the south and was rectangular in shape.
History
The history of Porto San Giorgio is linked to that of the city of Fermo, of which it was the seaport. Evidence of its existence comes to us from the writings of some historians such as Strabione, a Greek historian of the 1st century. BC, and by Pliny the Elder, 1st century Latin writer. AD. Figure in the "Tabula Peuntigeriana" (3rd century AD) with the name of "Castellum Firmanorum". Subsequently, in the medieval age, the importance of "Castel San Giorgio", counted among the possessions of the Canons of the Cathedral of Fermo, grew enormously as a commercial port, thanks also to the alliance between the city of Venice and the municipality of Fermo, to which it was ceded in 1260. It is no coincidence that from 1253 to 1275 two Fermo powers, Zeno Ranieri and Lorenzo Tiepolo, alternated as Doge of the Venetian city. The latter was above all responsible for the great development of the city's port activity and the construction of the fortress that bears his name, Rocca Tiepolo. In the 17th century the retreat of the sea made new lands available, which increased the development of the settlement of Porto San Giorgio. During the Napoleonic period the city achieved its complete autonomy from Fermo and, after the unification of Italy, defined its municipal territory. In this period the land reclamation work began, thanks above all to the Salvadori family. In 1863 the railway line was inaugurated which brought great development to the town and in the early 1900s it consolidated itself as a renowned tourist and seaside resort.
