Find out Massignano
Info and history
Massignano , formerly Massa Aniana, is a small hill town located about 6 kilometers from the coast, north of Cupra Marittima. Its territory extends to the sea, with a stretch of beach in the Marina di Massignano hamlet, between Cupra and Pedaso. Among the main economic activities, together with agriculture, has been, in the past centuries, the production of terracotta and ceramics.
Massignano probably already existed in Roman or even pre-Roman times. According to the historian Colucci, the city was a suburb of the ancient Roman city of Cupra. In fact, metal finds and pottery, an aqueduct and systems of Roman villas have been found in the area. In the century XII the existence of a castle is documented, the Castello di Forcella, of which only a few remains remain 2 kilometers from the town. In the century XIII the city was subjected to Fermo but was constantly contested by Fermo and Ascoli Piceno In 1532 the Ascolani conquered Massignano and up to the century. XVIII the town was part of the Papal State.
