Info
Pieve Torina is located in the hinterland of Macerata within the Monti Sibillini National Park, immersed in a landscape of woods and meadows. The city is today an important center for the breeding of pigs and cattle and the production of cheeses and cured meats. Among the more traditional economic activities there are handicrafts, including the working of wrought iron.
History
The territory of Pieve Torina was already populated in ancient times by the Umbrians from the 7th century BC. to pass under the Romans in the 3rd century BC. The village, resurrected in the Middle Ages, took shape as an agglomeration of small inhabited centers linked to castles already before the 13th century. The city was a fiefdom of Camerino until it was annexed to the State of the Church in the 16th century and then became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
What to see
Among the monuments and places of interest we mention the Romanesque parish church of Santa Maria (11th century), the Parish church of San Giovanni Battista (13th-17th century), the Church of San Michele Arcangelo (13th-16th century). Outside the town we find the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Caspriano (13th century) which stylistically recalls the sanctuary of Macereto, the Hermitage of S. Angelo in Prefoglio, also called " Hermitage of saints” (12th century), the Sanctuary of Santa Maria in Carpineto, the Castle of Capriglia and that of Torricchio and the Water mill of Fiume, which is part, as a branch, of a path of the Museo della Nostra Terra of Pieve Torina.
