Info
Ussita is located in the center of the Sibillini National Park and consists of numerous hamlets scattered in a valley on the slopes of Monte Bove; of exceptional landscape importance, it is a pleasant and equipped valley for summer and winter holidays. The lift systems (chair lift, ski lift, cable car) and the numerous slopes allow you to practice the most widespread winter sports; the conformation of the surrounding places favors excursions and ascents in the Sibillini Mountains; moreover, the presence of Monte Bove Nord (2112 m.), Monte Bove Sud (2169 m.) and Monte Bicco, constituting an imposing rocky massif with decidedly alpine characteristics, offers the possibility of climbing of various difficulties and of excursions of exceptional interest. The name derives from the Ussita stream which flows in the valley. The history of Ussita is linked to that of Visso, of which it was the most important of the five guaite which, in the 13th century, freed themselves from the authority of the feudal lords, became part of this municipality, always maintaining administrative autonomy in their own territory. The construction of the Castle on the Fantellino hill dates back to 1380, favored by Rodolfo di Varano. The castle, of which a stone tower from the 14th century with a square base remains, consisted of a trapezoidal walled enclosure, defended by five towers and an external moat; the ruins are visible in Castelmurato. The construction of the castle was an effective deterrent against possible incursions by the municipalities located on the Adriatic side of the Sibillini Mountains. In the following years, bloody struggles occurred within the Varano family itself.
